Surfacing: Northern Resident Orca "Pointer"

$160.00

Surfacing - Mature male Pointer (A39) of the A30 family (matriline) of Northern Resident Killer Whales.  Pointer stayed with his family his entire life (1975 to 2014. This is the way of “Resident” Killer Whales – the inshore fish-eaters. In this ecotype of Killer Whale, mothers share food with their sons their whole lives and and when the mother passes away, the sons appear to have a much harder time. Research supports that there is a 13x greater chance of sons dying in the year after their mother's death and indeed, Pointer's mother Tsitika (A30) died in 2013. The Northern Residents are a threatened population. Photo was taken in 2008 when Pointer was 33 years old.
