Brooding Anemone with babies

Brooding Anemone with babies

$120.00

Brooding Anemone mother with young.

She can have up to 300 babies that developed inside her and then benefit from the protection of her tentacles!

Brooding Anemones (Epiactis lisbethae to 8 cm across) are often confused with a similar species - Proliferating Anemones (Epiactis prolifera to 3 cm across).

The young of both species end up under mom's tentacles for protection, but there are so many differences in addition to Brooding Anemones being bigger, and that the pinstripes extend over their whole body.

Additional differences include:
- Reproduction of Brooding Anemones is seasonal, whereby the young under mom's tentacles are all of the same generation and size. Proliferating Anemones breed year-round; the babies are of multiple generations/ sizes, and there are usually far fewer of them on mom's column, and they are all in one row.

- In Brooding Anemones, the young hatch inside the female. The do NOT in Proliferating Anemones. The reproduction of Proliferating Anemones is astounding and SURPRISE I made a blog so that I could keep it all straight.

Detail about this species in my blog at this link.
